Casa Verde : Lunch at Singapore Botanic Gardens

As usual, KW and I were hunting for lunch last week and we thought of going somewhere near my office but far away so that we can relax as well. Eating lunch in Singapore, during the lunch hours of 12-2pm is often a strategic game of finding hidden spots and forgotten places. If you eat at the regular food joints in the shopping malls, you have to be very early or be subjected to people staring at you while you are eating.

We decided to come to Singapore Botanic Gardens for lunch at Casa Verde. We will always have a soft spot for Botanic Gardens because we got married here at Burkhill Hall 8 years ago. I love Burkill Hall because it is one of the rare spots in Singapore where you can have an outdoor garden setting.

Many Singaporeans get married in hotels and have traditional huge chinese weddings but we did not want that for us. I have always wanted a garden wedding and this venue was especially beautiful when the sun sets.

Casa Verde, meaning ‘Green House’ in Italian is part of the Les Amis group of restaurants in Singapore and this one is especially popular with the many tourists that frequent the Singapore Botanic Gardens. They serve good pizza, italian dishes and local singapore food as well. We like the Botanic Gardens as it is a welcome sight in urban Singapore – very few places these days are so full of plants and trees.

Whenever I am here, I am always torn between ordering local food vs the pastas or pizzas. On this visit, I went for the club sandwich and KW had the singapore laksa. We ordered at the counter and went to find seats in the cafe.

The club sandwich was good and the bread was toasted perfectly. I would have liked bacon in it but it was ham instead. KW’s laksa was good and he slurped up every last bit of laksa gravy.

Many locals have forgotten about the Botanic Gardens and I think it is time we visit it more often. With such perfect surroundings and good italian food, it makes for a good afternoon of leisure on weekends.
