Caffe Beviamo, Tanglin Mall, Singapore : A simple but satisfying lunch

Open concept cafe

We drove around for a while before deciding on coming to this cafe for our late lunch today. It has been a while since we visited Caffé Beviamo at Tanglin Mall and we suddenly thought of it.

And it turned out to be the perfect choice.

This cafe is situated on the 2nd floor of Tanglin Mall, which is one of the quieter malls in Singapore. I am not a fan of crowded malls especially those with the usual cafes or shops. Sometimes you forget which one you are in and it takes a while to recall. I have always liked Tanglin Mall and one of my favourite shops in there is Scandic Wonders – they sell really great candles and little ornaments for the house.

When we arrived, the cafe which has an open concept, was bustling but it was a controlled chaos. Waiters were busy serving customers, taking baby chairs for the kids, serving coffee and meals etc. We saw that many tables have been vacated but not cleaned yet so we waited for a short while. We got our seats shortly after and gladly browsed through the menu. The menu is straightforward and the selection is ample enough for a good selection during lunch : you have all day breakfast meals, eggs, sandwiches, soup, pastas, coffee and desserts. There are no mains like fish and chips, steak, fish etc and they keep it simple.

I was not sure what to order and took a while – I did not want sandwiches nor pasta today, strangely. As we were sitted next to the kitchen space, I took an interest in one of the dishes that was being served. I asked the waitress and to my amazement, it was something that I was craving for – hummus, olives and bread.

I know. Most people do not like hummus nor olives. But strangely, it is one of my favourite combinations in the world. I ordered that with a skinny flat white.

KW ordered penne with prawns, garlic and red chilli, coupled with a latte.

Though this is a simple dish, freshness is key and the flavors blend together well. He could distinctly taste the individual ingredients used yet it comes together superbly in this dish. Many restaurants often try too hard with pastas and forgot the basics of Italian food which uses simple and fresh ingredients. Caffe Beviamo does it well. KW finished it all.

Chickpea Puree & Olives

My dish was simple yet it was just what I wanted today. Today is extremely hot in Singapore and I was not keen on something too heavy. The hummus was nicely done and the olives were just tart enough for me.

Most cafes these days in Singapore try too hard and they have ‘fusion’ sandwiches, salads, mains. Everyone wants to carve out a unique space for themselves and they end up doing nothing well at all. We avoid such cafes and restaurants. Other cafes charge $20 for a simple eggs benedict dish and every single cafe has that on the menu!

We had a really good lunch today here and it was exactly what we were craving for. I would recommend this Australian cafe for an unpretentious, no-frills lunch or dinner.

Sometimes the best places are those that you have forgotten but a simple trip sends you back down memory lane and you wonder why you are not here more often.
