Singapore : Good eats

3 places that you need to eat at rightaway – lets start with desserts. Always on top of my list.

I love pie, cakes, sundaes and gelato.

Artisan Alfero Gelato

81 Mac Pherson Lane, #01-37, Singapore 360081

This quaint little place at Macpherson Lane is not easy to find but once you know how to get there, you will always revisit. I am not a ‘nut’ person (I don’t usually choose ‘nut’ flavours at ice cream places but I read that the testament of a good gelato cafe is to taste the pistachio ). This gelato cafe has 2 other branches in Singapore. One at Lorong Kilat & the other at Marina Square. We first tried the pistachio gelato at the Marina Square branch and was blown away by how fresh and flavorful it was. I googled and found that there is a branch in the East and we went there yesterday. You don’t get to ‘see’ the mountains of gelato that we are probably used to at other gelato cafes and it is because the owner keeps them in the pozzetto cabinet where air and light cannot contaminate the quality. Whatever it does, it is working!

We ordered 2 scoops of gelato and a waffle. Seriously, A&W should come back to Singapore. I miss the waffles, chilli dog and root beer float. But I digress… the waffles here were good but maybe I was too enamoured with the huge scoop of gelato on top to really analyse the waffle. The old lady at this branch is super sweet, giving us huge scoops of gelato. There is nothing worse than having a huge waffle and a tiny, neat little scoop of ice cream/ gelato.

I don’t mind big messy scoops, give me that anytime!

Club Street Social

5 gemmill lane, s(069261)

I have read many reviews about this place at Club Street, but have not had the chance to go till last week, after our body combat exercise session. I tried the pan-seared lobster panini and wow, I really did not expect so much from a sandwich. It came with avocado and the mayo had yuzu in it. Simple yet delicious. Try it. After this, no more lousy blah sandwiches for me from other restuarants. I am forever spoilt by this sandwich.

Seats are limited and we were slightly early before the dinner crowds descended so we got lucky. I heard that they are awesome for cocktails as well. Another excuse for us to revisit again then!

We also had the berries with vanilla mascapone for dessert. Good but the panini was the best.

After that, we drove around the area and saw a lot of other new cafes and restaurants that we have not tried yet. If you know any that are wonderful, please recommend to us.

Berries with Vanilla Mascapone

50 Keong Siak Road, Hotel 1929

We have our lunch here at least once a month. I bring friends back here and they always go away full and happy. And they return with other friends to try.

We were first introduced to this restaurant at 1929 hotel, 7 years ago when our cousin had his 21st birthday celebration there. Food was fabulous and so we have been going back since. I find the set lunches really good – quality of the dishes are consistent and we always go there whenever we want to have a good, delicious, comforting meal. Dishes on the menu do not change much but they do not need to. They are all winners, whether you have the beef or the fish or the duck confit. They have about 8 mains for their set lunches and they are all well – executed. On my most recent visit this month, I had bamboo clams as appetizer (it was one of the specials that day) and we also shared a sakura ebi apart from our 2 main dishes. I love the sakura ebi there.

Always ask for the specials as regulars usually call ahead to reserve them before they come. This place recently celebrated their 10 year anniversary and in Singapore’s volatile restuarant scene, this speaks volumes.
